Item Description
Mark Tobey (American, 1890-1976). Limited edition (42/50) aquatint print on paper. Untitled (standing figure). Signed "Tobey 1962" lower right. Numbered lower left. Artwork 13" x 16," Matting 16" x 20."

Mark Tobey was one of the founders of the Northwest School of art that included fellow artists Morris Graves, Guy Anderson, and Kenneth Callahan, among others. This group had a shared interest in philosophy and Eastern religions, and as he was senior in age and experience, he had a strong influence on the group. He went on to found the art department at the acclaimed Cornish School of Arts in Seattle. Tobey was mostly self-taught after early studies at the Art Institute of Chicago. He was widely traveled and converted to the Baha’i Faith after becoming familiar with it during his travels. It became an important part of his life and a large influence on his art. His densely structured compositions resemble Abstract Expressionist works, however, the motives for his compositions differ philosophically from most Abstract Expressionist painters.
